Why I'm renaming this thing
From "Steady, Cowboy" to Rangefinder
Howdy - I’m changing the name of this newsletter. Here’s why.
The name Steady, Cowboy has run its course.
It was a personal mantra that helped me when I was figuring things out. But the starting goal for this newsletter was simple: make a resource for photographers like me that I wish I had early on. And the more I write, the more I realize that means this needs to be about you — not me.
Going forward, this email’s called Rangefinder.
I ran a poll asking you what you want from this newsletter. Here’s what y’all said:
The pattern is clear. you want to become a better photographer, shoot more interesting work, and turn it into a business. That’s what I’m building this around.
Here’s what you’ll start seeing:
More breakdowns of actual photos I’ve shot: Lighting, composition, what worked and what didn’t
Practical stuff you can use: Breakdowns of studio light setups, tools that can help you get better in the field, tips from real working pros
Field reports + intel: Great campaigns or projects I saw, great work from the past, what’s happening in the world of photography and what it means for us
A couple things to know:
I’ll send this weekly, or as close to it as I can.
At some point, you’ll see a sponsor. It’ll be something that makes sense for photographers.
So that’s where this is headed in 2026. New name, new focus, renewed commitment to being useful.
If there's something specific you want me to cover — a technique, a topic, a question you're stuck on — just reply to this. I read everything.
If this isn’t for you, no big deal - an unsubscribe link is right at the bottom, click it anytime.
Thanks for reading, see you next week.
Garrett
